Columbus: last day dawns

General Convention 2006 closes at 6pm local time today. The House of Bishops and the House of Deputies will meet in joint session after the 9 am Eucharist to consider a resolution responding to the Windsor Report.

Here is Jim Naughton’s commentary on what it may or may not be able to do about Windsor before everybody goes home.

It is important to distinguish between Canons which can be changed at a single convention and Constitutions which require two. I was part of the coalition that worked to pass the ordination of women and we were able to do that on the vote of a single General Convention by showing it required only a canon change. I don’t have a current copy of the C&C but am sure one of you knows exactly which change is required to further restrict the right of a diocese to elect as it seems best and the right of a diocesan bishop to… Read more »

I don’t have a copy either, but I don’t think any change is necessary to effect a moratorium on bishops — all it takes is the agreement of a majority of bishops that they will not grant their consent. That is how the bishops have been able to effect the moratorium on all consecrations that has been in effect since the March 05 Covenant Statement of the HoB.

Ruth Gledhil gets wilder and woollier by the moment – “her” T2 piece is a monument to her own cock-up over Rowan’s investiture as a member of the Gorsedd of Bards (druid?) – she read the wrong website I seem to recall …. But her blog was a wonderful idea, now we can all see her mind doing its tricks and working its magic – and whereas once we could only guess at what was going on, now all is made clear. I was particularly moved to read that, even in London, she can discern that the Holy Spirit has… Read more »

Proposer: The Rev’d… Read more »

why will this pass when the previous wouldn’t?

what a wonderful thing, this would essentially be worse than what was proposed the day before, since it doesn’t even have an apology to the people being thrown to the wolves.

The PB’s words on a way forward shows leadership and feels in the spirit to me, as a queer man, even though lgbt folks will not be ordained to the episcopate for some time. We do need to listen & truly converse / convert as he says here.

Well, that’s that. The best the GC can come up with certainly doesn’t satisfy the requirements of the WR. However, there are powerful forces at work that will try to make this bandaid stretch to fit and cover the bleeding wound. Let the spin begin!

Lets just stop prolonging the agony, please! But given that Canterbury is desperately wanting to hold it all together, no doubt it will get its way.

And I will stay clear of Anglicanism other than as a paper member.

Merseymike: ‘And I will stay clear of Anglicanism other than as a paper member.’

That’s fine – cheque or cash will do!
