Committee completes its scrutiny of marriage bill

The hearings of the Public Bill Committee on the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Bill concluded around 11 am yesterday without a single amendment of any kind being made. However, one proposed new clause, which would have the effect of allowing humanist weddings, was negatived only by virtue of the casting vote of the chair.

Hansard record of yesterday’s hearing (morning session only) or as a PDF file here.

The next stage of the process will be a debate on the floor of the house known as Report Stage, followed by a Third Reading debate and vote.

Dates for this have not yet been announced.

Another tranche of submissions has been published, go here for full list (scroll down).
They include:
Marriage, Sex and Culture Group, Anglican Mainstream
LGBT Anglican Coalition
The Sibyls
Mark Jones and the Opinion of John Bowers QC (PDF)

I am glad that we live in a country where such representations can be laid before the legislature while they are considering particular pieces of legislation. But what a lot of horrible stuff they had to wade through. There is ample evidence here to suggest that lots of Christians are simply downright hostile to gay people: the whole characterisation is of gay people as fundamentally diseased, conspiratorial, destabilising, selfish and bad for society. It is such an unbalanced and unfriendly portrait of a group over against which they try to distinguish themselves (with the odd occasional claim to tolerance by… Read more »

I get the impression that they did a good job. David Burrowes worked very hard, bordering on filibuster but you got to love a tryer. Even with filibustering they finished with time to spare so the issues have been fully explored but no doubt the Lords will go into detail on a number of points. I am hoping for the govt to think again on a number of issues. The time for really testing things out will come in the report stage and in ping pong between the two chambers. Am hoping for humanist ceremonies, pension equality and an announcement… Read more »

“Lisa S Nolland, MA MCS PhD (Bristol), is a sex-culture historian who has worked with kids and their families as a primary and secondary school teacher, youth worker, mentor and chaplain for many years. She convenes the Marriage, Sex and Culture Group (MSC) of Anglican Mainstream” – Anglican Mainstream submission to Commission – To use the term ‘kids’ puts me off straight away! Ms Nolan is using out-dated theory to support her contentions about the innate sexual identity of GLBT people – with obviously no input from people who are actually involved. I do hope her silly and contentious submission… Read more »

“Anglican Mainstream is surely better described as ‘Anglican Slipstream’ – with little influence in today’s understanding of the world as it is.” Father Ron Smith If only that were true. Whilst the submissions from Anglican Mainstream read like the green-ink frothings of nutters (it’s a long time since I’ve seen so many scare quotes in one place as in Nolland’s piece – and Alan Williams’ submission was just a bizarre rant about a neo-Marxist gay plot to dominate the world, or something), who should be on its International Steering Committee, Convenor of its UK Steering Committee and a member of… Read more »
