More coverage of the Jamaica conference story

Several British newspapers have picked up the story relating to Andrea Minichiello Williams:

Meanwhile, Lester Feder at Buzzfeed has published another article about Jamaica which gives some context to the earlier report: Why Some LGBT Youths In Jamaica Are Forced To Call A Sewer Home.

Update

The Times also has a report, Tom Daley was turned gay by death of his father, claims leading evangelical Christian, but as usual it only available to paid subscribers.

It is very good that the true background and context showing the dire plight of lgbt people in Jamaica and especially for the youth. (See the Lester Feder at Buzzfeed article.) It shows the far-reaching consequences of the interference of American and British churchmen – I cannot call them followers of Jesus. The Churches role is appalling; and the Archbishop of Canterbury MUST speak out against these murderous attacks very soon, or all confidence in the integrity of the Anglican Communion will be lost for all time. The photographs alone tell their tale of oppression, but nothing can disguise that these… Read more »

Have Mrs Williams and the conservative evangelical lobby really have nothing to say about this? Only Peter Ould seems to have commented and, as was remarked elsewhere, he seems to have been more concerned to shoot the messenger. Mrs Williams will have learned the hard way that in this internet age you can’t go halfway across the world and expect your words not to be reported. That her remarks have been reported with disapproval by the Daily Mail, a disapproval universally echoed by DM readers, speaks volumes about the change in attitude over the past few years, a change which… Read more »

If every man became gay because his father died, then every man would become gay. Statistically speaking, it’s my understanding that the vast, vast majority of men’s fathers die. But perhaps Ms. Williams has access to better statistics than I do.

Getreligion.com is a right wing pressure group funded by Ahmanson that pretends to engage in objective media criticism concerning religion but in reality, its criticisms amount to complaining and nitpicking every story that doesn’t support a right wing christian agenda.

I found this on ‘VirtueOnline’ via Anglican Mainstream. Interestingly it concentrates on the Bishop of Chichester’s failure to uphold ‘Biblical truth’ rather than say anything about what Mrs Williams is reported to have said. Does this mean that there is no dispute that she actually did say it? Looks like it.

I laughed so hard this morning when I read the Get Religion piece from George Conger. George is a reporter who never lets the facts get in the way of a good piece of anti liberal polemic. Every edition of the video Anglican Unscripted he co presents is full of the very same poor journalism he points out here, and then some. When George was reporting and supporting an attack on Rowan Williams being a druid by Peter Oulds brother he repeated false and misleading information from the original Ruth Gledhill story a decade before. He even added further misleading… Read more »

Any remaining pretense that getreligion was about journalism just went out the window with the characterization of Scalia’s views on buggery laws as “intellectually respectable.” By whom? Not the late ++Michael Cantuar.
