The European Parliament, meeting this week in Strasbourg, is scheduled on Thursday afternoon to debate the situation in Nigeria, with specific reference to the proposed ‘Same Sex Marriage (Prohibition) Act’.
This forms part of a session concerned with: cases of breaches of human rights, democracy and the rule of law in Guatemala, Cambodia and Nigeria.

Y’know, I can remember a time when Ecclesia Anglicana could claim a part in the dismantling of apartheid, in a challenge to Thatcher-Reagan brutalist economics and all sorts of things which made one feel that we were on the side of the human race against the powerful (shades of the Magnificat). Once again, it takes a secular legislature to point out to the Church the very grave error of its ways. All I’ve heard from the bishops (with a very few notable exceptions) is silence; and that silence is thunderous from the ConsEv side. I can only assume that they endorse this legislation and would like to see similar laws passed in Europe and America. Incidentally, in case we are tempted to think this is a uniquely Nigerian problem, remember that the Southern Baptists are now seriously discussing the possibility of culling gay-gened embryos in utero.
