The European Parliament, meeting this week in Strasbourg, is scheduled on Thursday afternoon to debate the situation in Nigeria, with specific reference to the proposed ‘Same Sex Marriage (Prohibition) Act’.
This forms part of a session concerned with: cases of breaches of human rights, democracy and the rule of law in Guatemala, Cambodia and Nigeria.
Numerous motions have been filed: you can find links to them from this page (scroll down).
There is a news report here.
Jim N has pulled out the links to each of the motions here.
Update Friday
For what was agreed, see this EU press release: Human rights: killings in Guatemala and Cambodia, abuses in Nigeria.

I. whereas the Nigerian Parliament is currently examining a Bill entitled the 'Same Sex Marriage (Prohibition) Act', imposing a five-year prison sentence on anyone who 'performs, witnesses, aids or abets the ceremony of same sex marriage', but also on anyone involved publicly or privately in positive representation of or advocacy for same sex relationships,
6. Calls on the Nigerian Parliament not to adopt the proposed 'Same Sex Marriage (Prohibition) Act' in its current form, since it contains infringements of the basic human rights of freedom of expression and opinion, in particular when it envisages a five-year prison sentence for anyone involved publicly or privately in positive representation of or advocacy for same sex relationships;

Can we have a motion:
Calls on the Archbishop of Canterbury and other concerned Primates to publically condemn the proposed 'Same Sex Marriage (Prohibition) Act' in its current form, on the same basis as the EU motion, and to publically criticise those Anglican archbishops and bishops who give support this legislation as aiding the violation of essential human rights and acting in a manner completely contradictory to Anglican statements regarding the basic welfare homosexual people and listening to their experience.

If the 'instruments' of the AC will do nothing,to heed God's voice, the Lord can and will work through other bodies.

Posted by: Göran Koch-Swahne on Wednesday, 14 March 2007 at 9:12pm GMTY'know, I can remember a time when Ecclesia Anglicana could claim a part in the dismantling of apartheid, in a challenge to Thatcher-Reagan brutalist economics and all sorts of things which made one feel that we were on the side of the human race against the powerful (shades of the Magnificat). Now we're effectively up before the beak implicated in human rights abuses....
I hope the GS mafia and hangers-on find some dignity in this, 'cos I'm b*gg*r*d if I can.
Posted by: mynsterpreost (=David Rowett) on Wednesday, 14 March 2007 at 10:18pm GMTOnce again, it takes a secular legislature to point out to the Church the very grave error of its ways. All I've heard from the bishops (with a very few notable exceptions) is silence; and that silence is thunderous from the ConsEv side. I can only assume that they endorse this legislation and would like to see similar laws passed in Europe and America.
Incidentally, in case we are tempted to think this is a uniquely Nigerian problem, remember that the Southern Baptists are now seriously discussing the possibility of culling gay-gened embryos in utero. Christianity is going completely verkakte over this issue.

And more seriously - The Silence of the Lambeth - disgusting.

I SECOND THIS MOTION!
Where in the heck are the Primates and where is the leadership of the Anglican Communion? I'm truly appauled by the lack of "moral fiber" and the playing of denial/pretend and "politics" regarding this Nigerian "hate legislation" by the +++ABC and ++KJS too...do they really expect others to follow them when their shabby and dangerous sin of omission/discrimination is evidenced before OUR very eyes?
Meanwhile, hatecrimes, outcasting and demoralizing continues against LGBT Christians/Muslims/other in Nigeria/Uganda and beyond as the ABC gives us a little televised chat about hate, unthinkable greed/slavery from Zanzibar while ignoring the "chains" wrapped around the necks of fellow Episcopalians and ANGLICANS today!
