The Church Times reports the story: Bishop Jones apologises for Reading-affair open letter.
The Guardian has a profile: Whether you think he’s gone too far or not far enough, he has made an honest, brave and thoughtful contribution by Riazat Butt.
Posted by Simon Sarmiento on Friday, 8 February 2008 at 8:27am GMT | TrackBackThere's a major typo in the Guardian profile, in that Dr Homfray's name is incorrectly spelled throughout the article.
No doubt this will merit a correction tomorrow.
Good that he has said what he has. Does anyone have the text of the American apology issued in response to whatever gathering it was, I've lost track, that demanded their apology for having "torn the fabric of the Communion". As I remember, it was basically the same kind of thing: "Not saying our position is wrong, but sorry that we expressed it/acted on it the way we did. It hurt people."
"For Nigerians, its acceptance would allow Islamic critics “to portray the Church as compromised, weak, and in moral decline. These are serious missiological issues which need to be recognised and addressed.”
This is valuable. I don't think many in the West really appreciate the subtlties of that situation. My first thought was "Is there a cultural imperative on +Akinola to behave in this situation in such a way as to show this kind of scorn and defiance of one's opponents? I'm not comparing +Akinola to Saddam Hussein, but I remember at the beginning of the Iraq war, the statements from Iraq were about destroying all the Americans, etc. False bravado. They had to know it was hopeless, but their culture demanded that kind of show. Is there any explanation for +Akinola's behaviour in this kind of cultural outlook?
Indeed, Simon - and I don't work for John Moores University. But the Guardian have assured me that it will be corrected tomorrow.

Posted by: Lapinbizarre on Friday, 8 February 2008 at 2:09pm GMTSorry -- I hope I'm very wrong, but I am still not seeing anywhere that the Bishop actually apologized to the Dean.

I think the good Prior is right to ask where is this apology to Jeffrey John as well as to gay persons generally. These folks unleashed demons of which it is not clear at this point can be contained.
Posted by: Christopher on Friday, 8 February 2008 at 3:53pm GMTI blame Rowan for the errors - I have done a lot of typing in the last 24 hours. And without adding insult to injury, Mike Homfram must know that the grauniad is not the grauniad for nothing.
Posted by: riazat butt on Friday, 8 February 2008 at 5:41pm GMTI see Mike is now both Homfray and Horfram in the Grauniad article.
Someone send them a tutorial on how to use find + replace.
For those who missed it, I made a few observations on this latest Jones/Jeffrey story here: http://www.exgaywatch.com/wp/2008/02/bishop-signals-hope-for-same-sex-relationships-a-way-forward-for-ex-gays/
Posted by: Dave Rattigan on Saturday, 9 February 2008 at 10:51am GMTI read James Jones' article online so the text may not be the same as the printed version. But he seems to be trying to distance himself from his hardline evangelical fellowtravelers without actually apologizing to Jeffrey John or say that it's OK to be gay. Maybe he wants to be able to spin it both ways to each side. It's clearly an attempt to rebrand himself. It will be interesting to see if the hardliners on Wycliffe Hall council will be prepared to continue with him as their Chairman.
Posted by: Pete Williams on Saturday, 9 February 2008 at 11:04am GMTI think that the Bishop of Liverpool, having previously apologised to the Archbishop of Canterbury, should now thank him from the bottom of his heart. ++Cantuar's address on Sharia Law and English Law has so completely overshadowed the James Jones half apology that he may well get off without too much pain.
