Comments: American news reports

One might take the tack that we progressive believers should take advantage of these necessary occasions which have come upon all of us, thanks to this mean-spirited and high-handed new conservative believer realignment campaign.

We may make some good use of these occasions, since the conservative realignment is going to keep pressing for them anyways.

We can readily expect that we will be pressured to take sides in the realignment campaign, with conservative realignment believers telling us that the gospel is first of all and foremost - negative and nasty and condemning of people, not so much because people can choose and do unethical things to other people but because humans are born fallible mammals, evolved to an inferior fault and subject to our shared basic human condition.

But we are thereby given public opportunities to bear witness that the good news of Jesus is not, innately antigay, misogynist, self-serving, and above all aimed at putting the conservative religious parties in power over everybody else, both in church life and/or in general cultural life.

That is: We other believers may learn to welcome the many different opportunities to -

(1) decline the nothing-but presuppositional lexicons of conservative religious thinking, especially as these preach in USA and in USA-style emotions of fear or disgust or anger against both average unchurched people and modernity;

(2) make consistent overt claims to all of our common sense pledges to this or that piece of ethical living - committing to human justice or common sense fairness across our differences is not exactly nothing but an innately filthy and despicable endeavor, after all;

(3) consistently detach ourselves, again and again and again and again, from the self-serving and dubious conservative tendencies to posit everything in either/or, black/white, good/bad frameworks or categories (as if everything important in global and human life came pre-packaged in only two, categorically exclusive super market brands, one made by God and one made by the Devil?);

(4) consistently demonstrate that these newly puritannical and disgusted conservative religious folks do not have sole ownership of anything - not gospel, not service or helping, not witness, not ethical living, not healthy living, not citizenship, and certainly not our best examples of fallible/best practice empirical reason.
