Comments: WATCH responds to Tom Wright

The response of WATCH to the retiring Bishop of Durham is, to my mind, still far too accommodating to his desire for a 'pause' in the episcopal ordination of women process. It would appear that Bishop Tom has made his influence known to, and brought to bear upon, the Palace of Lambeth. If, indeed, the ABC and the ABY are preparing an amendment to the motion which would have allowed women's episcopal ordination - to the effect that 'it may be a good idea, but not just yet', this might point to Bishop Tom's influence over them.

Let's hope that the general Synod of the C.of E. will not be swayed in their desire to open up the episcopate to women as soon as is practicable. This would be the only just course to follow.

The longer the Church of England delays the process, the wider the gap that will appear in the Communion from the See of Canterbury and from the Instruments of Unity. The world will be watching.
