Comments: Pittsburgh: Calvary responds to Duncan

Wow, and I thought things were bad in our newly Network-affiliated diocese. God bless Fr. Harold, a man demonstrating great courage and conviction...

'Moreover, the bishop’s statement that “Scripture is the ultimate rule” is distinctly un-Anglican. While many Reformers, like Calvin, espoused a doctrine of sola Scriptura (only by Scripture) Anglicans since Richard Hooker have always understood Scripture to be one leg of the three-legged stool of Scripture, tradition and reason.'
How many times is this canard going to be trotted out? Fr Lewis (no relation) should check what Hooker actually says (section 5.8.2). He might also check the 39 Articles, particularly 6, 20, and 21.

I wonder if Mr. Lewis realizes that the 39 Articles are considered "Historical Documents" of the church (see our current Book of Common Prayer) ? Oh, and as a bit of nit-picking, article 21 has been omitted since the BCP version of 1801. As members of the ECUSA, The Chicago-Lambeth Quadrilateral gives us a sufficient definition of our faith.

If Mr. Lewis wishes to be associated with an Episcopal-style church which still uses the 39 articles in the manner to which he seems to allude, perhaps he should investigate the Reformed or Evangelical Episcopal Churches.
