December 2003 Synod Papers

A small packet of papers was sent to General Synod members this week.

Guidelines for the Professional Conduct of the Clergy

This is a publication of the Convocations of Canterbury and York, and has already been issued to clergy.

GS Misc 724 Weekday Lectionary: Sample Tables for 2002-3 and 2003-4

This is a corrected version of the original (issued last month) which was rather badly laid out.

Papers for the February 2004 group of sessions are scheduled to be posted on Fridays 16 and 23 January.

Availability of General Synod and related papers

General Synod papers are published by Church House Publishing (CHP) and paper copies can be purchased from Church House Bookshop.

On very rare occasions they are also published online. The obvious place to look for them is on the General Synod and Papers pages of the Church of England website. However, they do sometimes turn up elsewhere. For example, GS 1517, Strategic Financial Review, can be found on the Church Commissioners’ site.

When I discover any Synod papers online I will publish links to them here.

Although General Synod is responsible for producing Measures, Canons and various sets of Rules, the finished products are not considered to be Synod papers, and members do not receive copies.

Measures of the General Synod, once they have received the Royal Assent, become the responsibility of Her Majesty’s Stationery Office. All measures since 1988 are available on the HMSO website.

The Canons of the Church of England are available in pdf format on the Legal Services webpage. You can view and print these files, but it is not possible to copy text from them.

So far as I am aware the Church Representation Rules are not available online.

The Canons and Church Representation Rules are published by CHP.

Reports of Proceedings

General Synod members are not given copies of the verbatim reports of proceedings; if we want a printed copy we have to pay for it. However these reports are one of the very few Synod papers available online.

You will find a list what’s available if you visit the General Synod page of the Church of England website and click on the “Reports of Proceedings” link on the left hand side.

The report for the most recent group of sessions, July 2003, is here.

GS Misc 722 A Companion to Some Issues in Human Sexuality

GS 1519 has already been noted in our main blog.

GS Misc 713 Charta Oecumenica

The Charta itself was published in April 2001. It can be found here on the website of the Conference of European Churches.

GS Misc 721 Statistics of Licensed Ministers 2002

GS Misc 724 Weekday Lectionary: Sample Tables for 2002-3 and 2003-4

A report from the Liturgical Commission giving their proposals for a replacement of the temporary weekday lectionary. There are also some proposals to amend the rules for regulating and ordering services (for example to ensure that when 6 January is a Sunday the Sunday readings in Epiphany are used on the same days in the Church of England as in other churches).

General Synod Papers

I thought it would be useful to record the reports and other papers that I receive as a member of General Synod. There are typically ten mailings a year.

There are two series of numbered documents:

  • the prefix GS is used for all reports for debate by Synod.
  • the prefix GS Misc is used for background papers provided for information.

I will list all papers that I receive in these two series. Others, such as election papers, lists of appointments and flyers, will only be listed if I think that are likely to be of interest to non-members of Synod.

The first list will follow shortly.
