As no sources are cited in the latter, it is unclear whether the editorial came first or the other way around.

A great leader of men. When he became Sussex captain they went from nowhere to missing the 1953 championship by a whisker; and next year he was captain of England at 25.
He had little natural talent but bags of character – a good advertisement for the muscular Christianity ethos and the view that sport breeds (rather than reveals) character.
