A new dean has been appointed to Bangor Cathedral, with Canon Dr Manon Ceridwen James taking up the role from September. Details are in the diocesan press release.
I fear that it’s more of the same – the kind of appointment that Andy John would have made. But be that as is may, it would surely have been better to have waited for the election of a new bishop before appointing the dean.
Manon Ceridwen James seems like an inspiring candidate for Dean of Bangor and I wish her well and pray for her success. A Cathedral Dean is a spiritual leader but also the chief executive of a complex organisation comprising priests, musicians, manual workers, volunteers and vulnerable children. That would be a daunting task for anyone however holy. But fortunately the picture is not entirely bleak. For example St Woolas Cathedral Newport is an outstanding success under the leadership of an exceptional Dean and Bishop. I’ve known Manon for many years, I cannot think of anyone better suited to take on that position, in these circumstances.
I agree completely, having known her for over 20 years. All credit to her for grasping this nettle. My thoughts and prayers will be with her.
