General Synod Questions – February 2026

The 258 Questions (and answers) for next week’s meeting of the Church of England’s General Synod were issued today. They can be found online here:

There are two sessions scheduled for Questions: on Monday afternoon (not later than 6.00 pm) and Tuesday afternoon (not later than 5.30 pm). Afternoon sessions finish at 7.00 pm, so this allocates a minimum of two and a half hours to Questions.

Readers may be interested in Q57, concerning the charity commission and discussions on TA.

It could easily be missed, being so anodyne.

I’m an insomniac, trying to bore myself to sleep.

258 questions, and answers, sometimes to questions ‘taken together’. In theory that’s 2×258 ‘supplementaries’ to be asked and responed to in the approx 2.5 hours max allocated. Sadly, history shows that it is very unlikely that Q258 will be reached, possibly by some margin.I don’t have a record of how many have been reached at previous sessions of GS- maybe some other sad soul has?? How likely is it that any member of GS will have the time or fortitude to ‘wade through’ the answers given in order to prepare a ‘supplementary’? My brief ‘overviewing’ of the answers published suggests… Read more »

On average, we get through 70 questions an hour. In 2.5 hours, we will likely reach around no 170 to 175.

But this is a record number of questions, and is indicative of the lack of trust and transparency.

Q59 reached in the first session of 1 hour, so somewhat behind your ‘average’ Ian; though I was pleased to see you got in two Supplementaries. I note that the Chair took some time in introducing the session to request and remind questioneres of the value of being succinct, and answering on the question of what makes for an ‘adequate’ answer. I also note that several of those ‘answering’ offered to provide a written answer, or ask for the discussion to be ‘taken offline’- how might those responses be more widely ‘publiished’? I was pleased to see some ‘confession’ regarding… Read more »

A further 100 or so questions ‘addressed’ in the 1.5hoursof the second session; 159 in total over the 2.5 hours allocated to ‘questions’. ‘So what’ is sadly my reflection. So much time taken in preparing pertinent questions; so much time spent in preparing anodyne ‘answers’ and to whjat end. I hope questioners can feel they have voiced concerns, and that their voices have been heard. Perhaps time will tell. Maybe more will be done than is said. Time to review ‘What is Synod for, and how effective?’
