GAFCON: 'The Banned'

Ruth Gledhill reports from Jerusalem that:

The eight men and women pictured here are on the official list of those to be denied entry to Gafcon shouldthey try to show up. They are Colorado Bishop Robert O’Neill, Nigerian gay activist Davis MacIyalla being embraced by the Church of England’s Rev Colin Coward, Louie Crew, Susan Russell, Scott Gunn and Deborah and Robert Edmunds…

How do I get on the banned list?

Posted by: dodgyvicar on Monday, 23 June 2008 at 1:09pm BST

Not really suprising, is it?

Posted by: Göran Koch-Swahne on Monday, 23 June 2008 at 1:29pm BST

This just made my day. Maybe even my week.

"I tell you the truth, the man who does not enter the sheep pen by the gate, but climbs in by some other way, is a thief and a robber."

Robinson is not invited to Lambeth, but he goes anyway. O'Neill is not invited to GAFCon, but he goes anyway. Hmm, a pattern is developing.

hi TA - not sure how to email you a link so am shamelessly plugging it here. Enjoy http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2008/jun/23/anglicanism.gayrights

Not quite as long as Nixon's Enemies List, so far.

That these folks even have an enemies list is part of the mounting pile of evidence that their entire cause is driven by spite and built on resentment.

Posted by: counterlight on Monday, 23 June 2008 at 1:53pm BST

Wouldn't it be fun to take turns showing up just to keep them singng?

Posted by: Columba Gilliss on Monday, 23 June 2008 at 2:07pm BST

Robroy:

Robinson isn't going to Lambeth, he's visiting the United Kingdom. I wasn't aware he needed an invitation from Canterbury to do that.

And those who would lock the sheep pen to the most vulnerable in the flock are poor shepherds, at best.

Posted by: Pat O'Neill on Monday, 23 June 2008 at 2:25pm BST

Turned out nasty again (and the denials).

Posted by: Pluralist on Monday, 23 June 2008 at 2:40pm BST

The Rev. Robert Edmunds was recently appointed chaplain to Bishop Dawani of Jerusalem. So the GAFCON leadership is restricting the movement of Bishop Dawani's chaplain in Bishop Dawani's diocese.

And Jesus said, 'Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Well, not really all. Louie, Robert, Colin, Davis, Susan, Scott, Deborah and Robert need not apply... Sheesh!' (Mat 11:28, The New Reasserter's Standard Bible)

Posted by: Thomas+ on Monday, 23 June 2008 at 3:21pm BST

According to the article, Bishop O'Neill was invited to Jerusalem by the Bishop of Jerusalem, the host of Gafcon, who was himself not consulted about whether or not it was okay to have the conference in his diocese. This hardly qualifies as gate crashing to me!

Posted by: Caoilin on Monday, 23 June 2008 at 3:30pm BST

Hmmm looks like Akinola is the gate to the realignment sheep pens, then? Guess I'll graze outside for the time being. Never did fancy imprisonment and torture in Nigeria or Uganda or anywhere, for some reason.

Thanks to Ms B for all her work to shine journalistic lights on GAFCON and conservative realignment.

I am totally jealous that I haven't been banned. Last time, it was a deck of cards that David Virtue created and I was Seven of Hearts (Louie was Queen of Hearts). My congregation made a T-Shirt with the Seven of Hearts on it, which I wore all over GenCon 2003. Gee, perhaps this means they'll let me in. Hmm . . . Jerusalem is lovely this time of year. I'm off to check airfares.

Time magazine's June 7th piece, "Gay Bishop vs. Straight Bishop" notes of Martyn Minns' stated intention to stay away from Lambeth, 'Yet his life will keep him in the general area. "It just so happens that I do have family in England ..... I'll be there for little bit." Just in case he's needed, one presumes.'

".....is a thief and a robber" Robroy? Hmm, a pattern is developing.

What an honour to be on the banned list...funny Rowan isn't on it.

Posted by: Robert ian Williams on Monday, 23 June 2008 at 5:31pm BST

The GAFFEPRONE heretics and their "invitation only" gospel.

Quite startlig in it's arrogance, really. The Chaplain to the Ordinary and a guest of the Ordinary find that a gang og thieves and liars purport to restrict their movements within the Ordinary's jurisdiction.

Posted by: Malcolm+ on Monday, 23 June 2008 at 5:33pm BST

Condolences Elizabeth. And Susan made it. The shame!

I don't think Jesus was talking about Anglican groupings.

I find Robroy's utterances here regrettable--but not a patch on the good drs postings on titusonenine -- as they call it. Postively shameful there, among friends.

Have you never heard of

Why on earth would Dawani pick Edmunds, Jim lad? Did Trinity-Wall Street throw a little money around?

Posted by: Christopher Johnson on Monday, 23 June 2008 at 7:40pm BST

Christopher Johnson,

I suggest you find out the FACTS and tell us. NO?

Posted by: Göran Koch-Swahne on Monday, 23 June 2008 at 8:50pm BST

Gafcon supporters, of all folks, ought to be wary of slinging one-liners about who Trinity, Wall Street is backing, Christopher. Fans of Henry "So Much Money" Orombi are not exactly in the strongest of positions from which to be throw stones at others on this count.

Posted by: Lapinbizarre on Monday, 23 June 2008 at 9:25pm BST

I understand that Jerusalem's Pride celebration will overlap GAFFE-con. Maybe the Pride folks should take the photos of the Banned Eight and make masks of them and then march in the parade, proudly singing the Hymn of Protection ...

And I nominate Elizabeth as an Honorary Banned Person, since she was once named by David Virtue as A Major Lesbian.

Posted by: Cynthia Gilliatt on Monday, 23 June 2008 at 9:32pm BST

Mother Keaton a major lesbian? And now not banned?? Can we start a campaign?

Posted by: Erika Baker on Monday, 23 June 2008 at 10:20pm BST

A Major Lesbian

And David Virtue should know !

(I am greeen with envy)

Posted by: Treebeard on Monday, 23 June 2008 at 11:00pm BST

A Major Lesbian? How does one get promoted? I didn't get that info, but maybe it comes with the mail packet that I never received that details The Gay Agenda.

Posted by: kdj on Tuesday, 24 June 2008 at 12:16am BST

Major Lesbians can be a little *difficult* don't the Gafconites know this? Don't say you twern't warned...but, of course, I'mma forgett'n they don't have them "hooligan breeders" in Nigeria or Uganda according to Akinola and Orombi (who is just one of the former "skirt chasing" guys in his joventude).

Posted by: Leonardo Ricardo on Tuesday, 24 June 2008 at 3:03am BST

As convert to Catholicism, Oscar Wilde said,

" theres one thng worse than being talked about, and that is not being talked about."

No one seems to have got it...

A major Conference to defend Orthodoxy.

Yet they cannot define orthodoxy, without wall papering over cracks.

Christians assembled from five continents, in the very city where The Lord Jesus Christ walked and they cannot agree as to what He meant as regards marriage and divorce...fmale ordination as well ....so they simply ignore it and denounce and exclude their " enemies".!

As St Paul said, " Do i become your enemey that I tell yo the truth ?"

O yes! Gaffecon are gate-chrashing in Jerusalem.

You will receive The Gay Agenda after you've officially joined The Gay Lobby, occasional also called The Gay Lobbies.

Posted by: Erika Baker on Tuesday, 24 June 2008 at 12:26pm BST

"the mail packet that I never received that details The Gay Agenda."

Next time I'm in to the office, I'll get Albert to fax you over a copy. I don't know how you aren't on the mailing list. Are you going to the meeting tonight? We're finalizing plans for the destruction of the faithful remnant. There's not many left of them now, and since we have operatives at every level of TEC, it won't be long before they bend to our will. The orgy liturgy is pretty much written, and we've pretty much worked out the pseudotheology about Ashera being the Fourth Person of the Trinity. The Agenda is proceeding apace, despite you not having gotten your copy. Sorry about that, as I say, we'll have to update the mailing list. The Anglocatholics are bringing the gin, BTW.

Look kdj you may spire to Major Lesbian status but be patient--- it just grwos on one, creeps up, gradually dawns---

one day --like The Velveteen Rabbit ---you (may) find yourself one day a major lesbian !

Of course, you and i are unlikely to have our status confirmed so dramatically or deliciously

(david virute oops shld be virtue, shure knows how to do it !!)

Even the name Gafcon is here today and will be gone tomorrow--alas. I was so sorry when i realised the time-limited nature of Such a delicious name !!

It's just a delight that the local bishop has associations with two of the eight "not allowed".

One can not help but be bemused that history might not repeat itself with those who decreed the eight banned are then held in contempt in their own diocese. As they sought to make bishops and archbishops above review and accountability of what they would attempt to apply upon their ministers and parishioners. (Consistency in warnings about legal papers comes to mind).

Matthew 7:1-5 As some souls judge so they are judged, remove the plank from one's own eye before worrying about what is in another's.

Fortunately, I believe that God is just and each of us is given a home according to our temperament and judgement. My own will be a bit of a hodge podge, with some souls more "puritan" than my own and others more relaxed than myself; the one thing we all agree on is that everyone should be treated fairly and according to their own conduct, with the humility of recognising there is no point throwing stones as it would lead to dirty big holes in our own glass houses.

Ooops. I guess I let the cat out of the bag. I'll lose my Faggot's Union card next meeting for sure. And I was doing so much better on that fashion thing too! Ah well, what's a boy to do?

Also re Christopher Johnson's smart comment about Robert Edmunds and "Trinity-Wall Street throw[ing] a little money around", Ruth Gledhill has just revealed that Howard Amahnson is a GAFCON delegate (she also, in this context, links Jim Naughton's "Following the Money" and pulls off another scoop in posting a photograph of the apparently publicity-shy Amahnson).

Care to comment again on who may or may not be throwing money around, Christopher?

The attitudes of Gafcon, Reform ("The Taliban of the CofE"), Akinola etc; almost make me ashamed to be an Anglican - have they forgotten an inclusive Christ "who opens wide his arms in love"?
