New Zealand General Synod – Monday

The General Synod of the Anglican Church in Aotearoa, New Zealand and Polynesia debated the proposed Anglican Covenant today (Monday). Anglican Taonga has a number of reports of the debate.

From the contents of the ‘Taonga’ Report from the Aotearoa/New Zealand Anglican Church General Synod it will be seen that there is some disquiet about Section 4.2. of the proposed Covenant Document. Members of General Synod heard Bishop Victoria Matthews say that there is ‘nothing to fear’ from the Covenant process. However, already some grave reservations have been expressed – mainly, about the perceived punitive provisions which would allow for the exclusion of Provinces which were deemed by the governing body to offend against a general consensus on matters of discipline.
