A truly great moment for women, glbt people and their value in the Church. Let’s hope the Archbishop of Canterbury will now moderate his “regrettable” comments of the previous summer and embrace this fine woman as an equal member in Christ’s Church. I imagine the hate speech from the global south and fundamentalist bishops like the ones from the not yet recognized “Anglican Church of North America” will be forthcoming in the next few days, but I believe most people will be turned off by such words and will take the position that it is time to move on. At… Read more »

It is important to remember that any “rift” or “tear” or any such is in fact “a rift IN the Anglican Communion” — it is not a rift between the Anglican Communion and some entity not a part (or no longer a part, as Anglican Mainstream and others would have it) of the Anglican Communion. So much of this is based on the self-fulfilling false prophecy of those who attribute more authority to the Instruments of Communion than they have been granted by the actual member churches and provinces of the Communion. The fact is, we disagree — and we… Read more »

Whittell & Gledhill: “Stunned by the ferocity of protests over Bishop Robinson’s ordination, the Episcopal Church approved a temporary ban on the ordination of more gay bishops, but revoked it last summer ***after*** the Los Angeles diocese announced its intention to ordain Canon Glasspool.” [Emph. added] False. The General Convention’s approval of [Somebody help me out w/ the Resolution#! D35?], believed by most to render the previous GC’s moratorium (B033) moot, was achieved about 6 months ***BEFORE*** Canon Glasspool was elected bishop (in December). However, I shouldn’t bury the lead: Thanks be to God, for our new bishops +Diane and… Read more »

Contrary to Whittell & Gledhill, Jon Bruno is ‘only’ the Bishop of the Diocese of Los Angeles, and not an Archbishop. I expect he will be royally pleased, however.
And hurrah!

I may have missed it in the Whittell/Gledhill article, but I think they failed to mention that the chief consecrator was our Presiding Bishop [not an Archbishop either], Katharine Jefferts Schori.

“Sexuality figures nowhere in the creeds. It is not mentioned in the church’s liturgies. When godparents bear witness to a baby’s baptism they do not swear to help to raise the infant as straight.” – Ruth Gledhill, Times on line – Thanks Ruth, for this timely article. By their consecration as Bishops in the Church of God, Mary and Diane, have been empowered by the Holy Spirit to carry out the onerous tasks of the episcopate in the Church of their ordination – TEC. Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori has demonstrated her belief that the Gospel of Christ is a potent… Read more »

Does anyone share my sense of sympathy for the place that +Diane Jardine Bruce finds herself in? When I tried to google her name, I immediately found a picture of +Mary Glasspool. To be elected as a bishop in a diocese where she is one of the parish clergy is a tremeous achievement, and worthy of great celebration in its own right, but someow she is portrayed as that other nice lady at Mary Glasspool”s consecration. Still, I suppose it has its compensations. The spotlight will remain on +Mary in the months and years to come, and +Diane will be… Read more »

“The nature of the Communion’s structures at present is such that effecting this distancing will require clear and decisive action by the Archbishop of Canterbury. At the very least he needs to make clear that bishops participating in the May consecration in Los Angeles will thereby exclude themselves from being invited by him to participate in the Instruments or to represent the Communion in any form.” – Fulcrum Statement from G.S. on-line – And what about Nigeria’s disassociation from the Archbishop of Canterbury in their action of removing any reference to Canterbury from their Provincial Statutes? Has this not already… Read more »
