Primates Meeting: Saturday bulletin

Here’s the official bulletin: Primates’ Meeting – Briefing #4.

Today’s meeting moved from the work of reflecting on the exercise of primacy and the purpose and nature of the Primates’ Meeting, to considering the role, purpose and composition of the Standing Committee of the Primates. In addition to attending the Anglican Consultative Council (ACC) and the Standing Committee, other roles suggested for the committee by Primates included “holding” the life, vision and spirit of the meeting between the Primates’ Meetings; helping to shape their future meetings; and acting as a consultative group for the Archbishop of Canterbury. Several groups also suggested that the Primates’ Standing Committee might have an ongoing bridging role between the Primate’s Meeting and the regions from where the Primates come…

There are some pictures posted, which you can reach via here (and then top left).

Titus Presler asks some Questions about Anglican primates’ day on theology/ecumenism/covenant.

And there is more from Ed Beavan here.

Excuse me? There’s another Standing Committee? I thought I understood the structure of the Anglican Communion pretty well, but I don’t recall ever hearing of a Primates’ Standing Committee. I take it that this differs from the Standing Committee of the Anglican Communion.

It seems to me that these folks have the cart before the horse. Usually a group has a need and creates a committee to address that need. Here it looks like these folks have created a committee and now they are trying to come up with things for the committee to do. Looking for justification for the committee?

Hmmmm Alan, there has been a Primates Standing Committee spoken of for some time – but I must say that I thought it had been subsumed into the new Standing Committee – clearly not.

Alan, both the Primates Meeting and the ACC have Standing Committees. Together the two committees formed the Joint Standing Committee of the ACC and the Primates Meeting. That joint committee has been renamed in the new ACC bylaws as the Standing Committee of the Anglican Communion. Nothing is new structurally, just a new name for the joint committee.

…why does this remind me of Nero fiddling while ‘Rome’ burns?

All we need now is an UNDER-STANDING Committee, so that ordinary folks like us can get a handle on what is going on in the real world of the Anglican Cmmunion. I understand there may be yet another one on the way!

“both the Primates Meeting and the ACC have Standing Committees.”

I sit corrected.

Richard Ashby has got it right on this one.

I’m an Old Guy. I remember when there was a Lambeth Conference every ten years, and in between lots of Anglican churches did a lot of going back and forth and sharing ministry and mission with other Anglican churches, and it all seemed to work pretty well, and was often very inspiring.

[Cross-posted to Titus Presler’s blog–] “The Anglican crisis is full-blown, I have criticized efforts to minimize it, and it deserves the kind of attention it has been receiving.” The problem w/ this analysis, is that it gives too much power to those CREATING the crisis, who—by their own choice—stand outside (the instruments of communion), and foment further “crisis.” Communion is necessarily (if not sufficiently) “showing up.” Ecumenical relations need not be put on the back-burner, if those who *did* show up, merely say “The Communion is HERE: let us now reach out to those outside of it!” (The reactions we… Read more »

Well at least the Primates who did meet together issued some important statements about Kato’s death and other important matters. Thank God for that. Una
