More on the General Convention marriage canon proposals

American Episcopalians are, of course, not the only Christians dealing with the theology of marriage.

This week, the Synod of the Scottish Episcopal Church is discussing changing its canons on marriage. http://www.scotland.anglican.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/General-Synod-2015-Agenda-and-Papers.pdf (pp. 48-50). In addition, yesterday the noted American evangelical, Tony Campolo, issued a statement advising that he has changed his views and sats that "countless hours of prayer, study, conversation and emotional turmoil [have brought] me to the place where I am finally ready to call for the full acceptance of Christian gay couples into the Church." http://tonycampolo.org/for-the-record-tony-campolo-releases-a-new-statement#.VXYOkzvbK72

Mr. Giuliano, after spending much time reading and rereading your answer it seems to me that it might be helpful to say this to you and your Communion Partner allies: the exclusivists no longer own marriage, not within the culture and not within the Episcopal Church. You are free to go and create a new ritual or institution, and you can call it whatever you want. But today no one can credibly use the word "marriage" to mean an exclusivist straights-only institution. That old bigotry is washed out of the definition, now. Marriage includes equal marriage, and the exclusivists no longer own the meaning of marriage. So when you try to do a theology of marriage, now, and leave our marriages out of your understanding of marriage, you are failing to adequately understand the institution. We are part of marriage. Marriage minus equality for us can't conceivably be the image of the union of Church and Christ, or anything else, or even what marriage might have been in the past. Our marriages are so part of the institution that if you were to tear us out, leaving a straights-only institution, it would wouldnt be "marriage" that remained - but only a new thing disturbing in scope of bigotry.So back to the drawing board; if you want to write a theological account of marriage pay attention to the fact that we are included in it, too. The exclusivists no longer own the definition of marriage.
