Regarding the Spanish Inquisition and those pesky “judaizers”: For quite a while, as the Christian Spaniards wrested political and territorial control from the Muslim Spaniards, Jews were harassed, questioned, forced to wear special clothing, forced to listen to priests who party-crashed services at will in Jewish synagogues, restricted to what employment they could work, etc. So, many Jews gave up and converted. Then the REAL fun began. The new Christians were considered suspect. The Inquisitors doubted whether the conversions were really sincere, or were motiviated by outside wordly concerns. I want to reverse around the order of two paragraphs of that Independent article: *** So, does all this mark the start of a life change? Has joining the jobless shaken his faith… This is just one of the writing projects he is undertaking. Tomorrow he starts working shifts on the leader desk at The Guardian, which he plans to do for the remainder of his notice period. That’s the journalist’s opinion of urban ministry, I hope, not Giles’. Otherwise he’s in for a nasty shock…
