Yes, thanks Colin. There is much to say about affirmation v. the negative, Nietzsche’s full quote was ‘God is dead, He died out of pity for mankind’ and my interpretation is that it was the negative God who had died, the affirmative God was well and alive.
I’m glad Savi Hensman has written a blog commenting on the withdrawal of Issues in Human Sexuality, as a document seeking ordination in the Church of England (and in many cases, a licence for lay ministry) will no longer be required to sign up to. Savi says there are hopes that the withdrawal of Issues will remove an obstacle to the church becoming more loving and welcoming. There is still a long way to go, she says. Yup! Thanks for engaging, Colin. My own approach to Christianity is more ‘orthodox’, though as finite beings I think we can never fully comprehend the wonder and beauty of the Divine. For instance I believe that, across various shades of religion and ideology, we humans are indeed capable of great good but also evil. So, for me, embracing the the unconditional love of God is less seeking ‘the quality of being more fully yourself’ than being willing to be challenged as well as embraced. The Church’s continued obsession with sex is comical. I like the Buddhist teaching that your sexual conduct should not harm anybody. What more need be said?
